Risk assessment

In its current state, the robotic system constitutes partly completed machinery as defined by the relevant directives. Safe operation is only guaranteed once the system has been integrated into a higher-level overall system. Depending on local regulations and legal requirements, it is therefore mandatory to conduct a risk assessment before commissioning this entire system. As part of the risk assessment, the necessary protective measures to ensure safe operation must be systematically identified, evaluated and documented. This falls within the integrator's area of responsibility.

Assessment of protective measures

Before the system is put into operation, the protective measures that have been implemented must be evaluated in accordance with the requirements of the risk assessment.

The following are examples of tests that generally need to be performed in this context. All tests for configurable safety functions are described in the safety function instructions.

  • Check to make sure that all safety inputs and outputs are properly and correctly connected (check SF1–SF16 in the safety functions). Verify that all connected safety inputs and outputs, including devices shared by multiple machines or robots, are functioning properly.
  • Check whether the emergency stop devices (enable unit and external emergency stop devices) stop the robot and engage the brakes.
  • Check whether the enable switch must be held in the middle position to trigger robot movement in manual mode and whether these movements are performed only at reduced speed.
  • Verify that all systems connected to safety-related outputs are capable of reliably detecting changes in output power when required.
  • Check whether the operating mode can be changed using the key switch and whether the robot stops when this is done.
