This section explains the symbols used in this manual.
Safety notices
The safety notices in these instructions include the following elements:
Warning of an immediate danger to people
This safety notice warns of an immediate danger that could result in serious injury or death.
Warning of a potential danger to humans.
This safety notice warns of a potentially dangerous situation that could result in serious injury or death.
Warning of a potential danger to humans.
This safety notice warns of a potentially dangerous situation that could result in minor to moderate injuries.
Warning of possible property damage.
This safety notice warns of potential equipment damage.
A safety notice consists of the following, in addition to the symbol and the signal word:
- Keyword
- Nature and source of the hazard
- Consequences
- Escape (= measures taken to escape danger)
Example
Electric shock due to high voltage (Type and source of the hazard)
Death by electric shock! (Consequences)
► Wait four minutes before working on the motor connections! (Measures)
Warning symbols
The following warning symbols are used in this manual. These symbols are primarily intended to draw the reader's attention to the text of the accompanying warning or safety notice.

Directional terms
Directional indications, when unambiguous, refer to the respective position as seen from the operator station.
The direction of rotation of electric motors is described as clockwise or counterclockwise when viewed from the end face of the output side – that is, from the side to which a machine or system is coupled.
Markings in the text
- Bulleted lists are indicated by a dash (–).
- Text highlighted in this way indicates references and hyperlinks that point to related topics, web addresses and additional information.
- Text highlighted in bold indicates emphasis or subheadings.
- Menu items, tabs, buttons and controls are enclosed in angle brackets
<...>, e.g.,<Machine>. - Sequences are enclosed in angle brackets
<...>, e.g.,<Login/Semiautomatic/Start>. - Keys on a keyboard are enclosed in square brackets, e.g.,
[Return]. - Text highlighted as PLC indicates a cross-reference to the glossary with a definition of the term.
